Why We’re Not Afraid to Teach You Marketing

I was at a networking event recently, talking with someone I had just met about Your Brand Build, or YBB, and our focus on helping small business owners learn how to understand and manage more of their own marketing.

He looked at me for about half a second and said:

    “How do you make money?”

I laughed because honestly, fair question.

If your business is built around marketing, why would you teach business owners how to understand it, plan it, and do more of it themselves?

Wouldn’t that mean they need you less?

    Maybe.

But also… that’s kind of the point.

At YBB, we are not afraid to teach you marketing. In fact, we are pretty excited about it.

Because we believe small business owners should not have to feel completely dependent on someone else to understand their own brand, website, content, customer journey, or marketing strategy.

And we believe that whether you are managing an agency, working with an internal marketing team, handling your marketing yourself, or beginning to build a personal brand, you should understand enough about your marketing to lead it with confidence.

You do not have to become a full-time marketer. You already have a business to run, clients to serve, invoices to send, fires to put out, and probably at least one tab open on your computer that you forgot about three days ago.

    We get it.

But you should understand enough about your marketing to know what is happening, what questions to ask, what needs attention, and what your next best step should be.

DIY Marketing Does Not Mean Doing Everything Alone

Let’s clear this up right away.

DIY marketing does not mean you should design every graphic, write every blog, build every web page, figure out SEO, master email automation, record videos, analyze your data, and somehow still run your business and drink water.

That is not empowering. That is exhausting.

DIY marketing, the YBB way, means you learn the foundation.

You understand who you are talking to. You know what you offer and why it matters. You can explain what makes your business different. You know what your website needs to say. You can look at your content and tell whether it is helping people take the next step. You understand the basics well enough to make smart decisions.

    That changes everything.

Because when you understand the foundation, you are no longer just guessing. You are not throwing random posts online and hoping something magical happens. You are not paying for marketing services without knowing what questions to ask. You are not building your brand on borrowed language that sounds like everyone else.

“You are leading your marketing instead of simply reacting to it.”

DIY marketing works best when you have the right tools, guidance, and a plan you can actually use.

This Matters for Small Businesses and Personal Brands

For small business owners, marketing can feel like one more thing on a very full plate.

You may already have a successful business. You may have clients, referrals, a team, a good reputation, and years of experience behind you. But now your business is growing, your market is changing, or your current marketing feels harder to manage than it used to.

Maybe you have an agency, but you want to understand the strategy better.

Maybe you have a marketing coordinator or team member, but you need a clearer way to guide them.

Maybe you are still doing most of it yourself, but you are ready for it to feel more organized and intentional.

Or maybe the business is you.

You are the consultant, speaker, coach, advisor, realtor, creative, service provider, or subject-matter expert. You are not just trying to market a company. You are trying to build trust in your name, your voice, your experience, and your perspective.

    That is personal brand work.

And personal brand work can feel surprisingly personal because, well, it is.

It is one thing to say, “Here is what my company does.”

It is another thing to say, “Here is what I believe, here is how I help, and here is why people should trust me.”

That takes clarity. It takes confidence. And sometimes it takes someone walking beside you saying, “Yes, that is the good stuff. Say that.”

That is part of what YBB is here to do.

Good marketing helps people understand your story, trust your direction, and take the next step.

“The best marketing help should make you smarter.”

The Best Marketing Help Should Make You Smarter

Here’s where we may say the quiet part out loud.

Some marketing companies are wonderful. They guide, explain, educate, collaborate, and help their clients grow.

    We love those companies.

But sometimes, even in well-meaning marketing relationships, the business owner can start to feel a little removed from the process.

You may not always know what is happening, what is working, what is not working, or why certain things are being recommended.

That does not mean anyone is doing something wrong. It just means there may be a gap between the work being done and your ability to understand, lead, and make confident decisions around that work.

And that is where YBB sees things differently.

We believe good marketing support should help you become more capable over time.

A good coach wants the athlete to improve. A good teacher wants the student to understand. A good guide wants you to recognize the trail markers, not wander in circles forever.

So why should marketing be any different?

When you learn how your brand, message, website, content, and customer journey work together, you become a better decision-maker. You can spot gaps sooner. You can give clearer direction. You can review work with more confidence. You can tell the difference between marketing activity and marketing strategy.

And that is a very good thing.

    We Are Not Anti-Agency

    This is important.

YBB is not anti-agency. We are not anti-outsourcing. We are not anti-hiring-experts.

    Goodness, no.

There are absolutely times when hiring help makes sense. Sometimes it is the smartest move you can make.

You may need someone to build your website, clean up your SEO, design your brand, run your ads, set up your systems, produce your videos, write your copy, or create a full strategy.

    But here is the difference:

When you understand your own marketing foundation, you become a much stronger client.

You know what you need. You know what matters. You know what questions to ask. You know whether the work connects back to your goals.

That makes the outside expert’s job easier too.

The right marketing partner should not be threatened by an informed business owner. They should be relieved.

Because when a business owner understands their brand and direction, the work gets better. The conversations get better. The results have a better chance of getting better too.

    Everybody wins.

    Imagine that. Wild concept.

So, How Does YBB Make Money?

    Back to the networking question.

    “How do you make money?”

We make money by helping small business owners build marketing they actually understand.

Through tools, workshops, guides, resources, community, and practical support, we help you take our decades of marketing experience and turn it into something you can actually use in your business.

Not theory. Not fluff. Not a 97-page strategy document that lives in a folder forever.

Real steps. Real conversations. Real progress.

We are here for the small business owner who is smart, capable, and ready to make better marketing decisions.

We are here for the business owner who wants to learn before they spend. The one who wants to understand what they are building. The one who wants their marketing to sound more like them and less like everyone else. The one who knows they need help, but does not want to hand over the keys without understanding where the car is going.

And we are here for the person building a personal brand who knows they have experience, insight, and value to share, but needs help shaping it into a message people can understand and trust.

    That is our sweet spot.

We Believe Marketing Should Feel More Doable

At the heart of YBB is a simple belief:

Small business marketing should feel more doable.

Not easy every second. Not instant. Not “post three times and become famous by Friday.”

    But doable.

With the right foundation, the right tools, the right guidance, and a little bit of “you’ve got this” energy, small business owners can make meaningful improvements in how they show up, explain what they do, and guide people toward working with them.

That is what we are excited about.

We are excited to teach. We are excited to simplify. We are excited to bring our decades of marketing experience out of the agency conference room and into the hands of business owners who are ready to build something stronger.

So no, we are not afraid to teach you marketing.

    We are counting on it.

“When you understand your marketing, you make better decisions.”

Because when you understand your marketing, you make better decisions.

And when small business owners make better decisions, there is still plenty of room for good strategy, good support, good creative partners, and yes, good business.

    Including ours.
